Origin: Italy - Sicily

Bergamot, or Citrus bergamia, belonging to the Genus Citrus (fam. Rutaceae), is a citrus fruit with a green/yellow peel. In addition to being used as a base for cosmetics (perfumes, creams, etc.), it is often juiced with other fruits or used to make jam. It can be sliced and added to infusions and teas instead of lemon, or used to create bergamot liqueur.

Its proven effectiveness is against high cholesterol; in fact, bergamot juice contains two substances from the flavonoid family (hesperetin and naringenin) which have the same anti-cholesterol effects as synthetic drugs (statins, with their various side effects), but without the side effects of the latter.

The juice: this is the best way to achieve the greatest anti-cholesterol effect. Clinical studies were conducted by administering 50 cc of bergamot juice daily, between meals, for 60 days.

What is bergamot?

Bergamot (Citrus × bergamia) is a citrus fruit of the Rutaceae family, slightly larger than an orange and slightly smaller than a grapefruit, with an intense yellow color and a smooth, thin, and highly fragrant peel. It is one of the citrus fruits richest in essential oils: its unmistakable aroma — fresh, citrusy, and slightly bitter — is the same one that fragrances Earl Grey tea and the most famous colognes.

Where does Arancebio's bergamot come from?

Our bergamot is grown in Sicily, in our organic citrus groves, and hand-picked at the height of the season. Historically, bergamot is linked to the Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria, which produces about 80% of it worldwide: we uphold the same artisanal care on the Sicilian side, offering you a fresh organic bergamotfrom a short, traceable, and Category I supply chain. It is a fruit intended to be consumed fresh, not just processed into essence.

When is fresh bergamot season?

Bergamot season runs from November to March. During these months, we pick it only after receiving your order, so the fruit leaves freshly picked and arrives still firm and fragrant. We ship at the beginning of the week (Monday and Tuesday) to avoid stops in depots during the weekend and ensure maximum freshness.

What does bergamot taste like and how is it eaten?

Bergamot has an aromatic and slightly bittertaste, more intense and acidic than an orange: it is rarely eaten in segments on its own, but it is extraordinary in cooking. You can squeeze its juice(a few drops flavor water, tea, and herbal teas), grate its zestover desserts, first and second courses, add it in slices to tea instead of lemon, or use it for jams, candied fruit, sorbets, and cocktails. Thanks to organic certification, the peel can be used without problems.

Why choose organic bergamot?

Choosing organic bergamotmeans being able to use even the most precious part of the fruit: the peel. In bergamot, the zest is rich in essential oils and is the most used part in cooking, so organic quality — without waxes or chemical treatments post-harvest— makes a real difference. Added to this are the direct supply chain(from our citrus grove to your home, without intermediaries) and picking to order, which ensures you a freshly picked fruit and not one stored for weeks.

Bergamot and well-being

Bergamot has always been appreciated for its content of vitamin C, flavonoids, and polyphenols typical of citrus fruits.
