What are the best oranges for juicing?
The best oranges for juicing are the Sicilian varieties with juicy flesh and thin peel:Tarocco,Moroand Navel. An ideal juicing orange is medium-small, with few seeds and a juice yield of about 40-50% of its weight: 1 kg of oranges yields on average almost half a litre of fresh juice.
In our citrus grove in Francofonte, in the province of Syracuse, we grow these varieties using certified organic methods by Bioagricert. The area is part of the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP(PGI Red Orange of Sicily) region: the strong temperature difference between day and night at the foot of the Iblei mountains promotes the accumulation of anthocyanins, the antioxidant pigments that colour the flesh of Tarocco and Moro red.
Tarocco, Moro or Navel: which to choose for juicing?
Tarocco produces a sweet and balanced juice with red hues, Moro an intense red juice with a more decided flavour, and Navel a blonde and sweet juice, without seeds. Here's the comparison:
Tarocco PGI— yields an orange juice with red hues, sweet, balanced and aromatic. It is harvested from December to May.
Moro— its juice is intensely red and has a decided flavour, with notes of red fruits. Harvesting runs from January to March.
Navel— offers a golden blonde juice, sweet and low in acidity. It is harvested from November to January.
If you are looking for the classic taste of Sicilian red orange, choose Tarocco or Moro; if you prefer a sweeter and more delicate juice, Navel is the right variety even for children.
What is the season for juicing oranges?
The season for Sicilian juicing oranges runs from November to May: it begins with Navel, continues from December with Tarocco and from January with Moro. This is the only period when we ship freshly picked oranges: out of season, we do not sell warehouse or imported oranges.
What is the difference between juicing oranges and eating oranges?
The difference is in size and intended use, not quality: for juicing, smaller fruits are selected, with thin skin and more juice; for eating, larger fruits with firm flesh and easy-to-peel skin are used. Any ripe orange can still be juiced. Our juicing oranges are the same organic fruits as the eating sizes, just smaller: this is why they cost less for the same harvest.
How many oranges are needed for one juice?
For a 200 ml glass of juice, an average of 2-3 juicing oranges (300-400 g of fruit) are needed. A 10 kg box is equivalent to approximately 20-25 juices; a family that drinks 2 juices a day will consume it in 10-12 days, the time during which untreated oranges keep perfectly in a cool place. A fresh orange juice provides about 34 kcal per 100 ml and covers a large part of an adult's daily vitamin C requirement.
Why choose untreated organic juicing oranges?
Because during juicing, the peel comes into contact with the juice, hands, and juicer: conventional oranges can be treated post-harvest with waxes and synthetic fungicides, ours are not. AranceBio oranges are organically certified by Bioagricert, undergo no treatment after harvesting, and have edible peel: you can use the zest for desserts, liqueurs, and marmalades without risk.
