Organic Sicilian grapefruits
AranceBio's organic Sicilian grapefruits are Citrus × paradisi citrus fruits cultivated in Sicily using certified organic methods and hand-picked, so they arrive at your home at the perfect ripeness. In this collection, you'll find the three souls of grapefruit: pink, sweet and with pulp rich in lycopene; yellow, more aromatic and pleasantly bitter; red (Star Ruby and Rio Red cultivars), intense and sweet.
Born from an ancient cross between sweet orange and pomelo, grapefruit belongs to the Rutaceae family, like oranges, tangerines, and lemons. It's perfect for a juice rich in vitamin C, to be enjoyed in segments for breakfast, or used in salads and sweet and sour recipes. Choose the variety and format: we pick the fruit after your order and ship it fresh to you.
Grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi) is a citrus fruit of the Rutaceae family, originated in Barbados in the 18th century from a spontaneous cross between sweet orange(Citrus sinensis) and pomelo(Citrus maxima). It is recognized by its large fruits, gathered in clusters on the tree—hence the English name grapefruit—and by its flavor, which balances sweet, sour, and a bitter note.
Beneath the peel, the white, spongy albedo protects a pulpy flesh divided into segments, juicy and fragrant. Depending on the variety, the color ranges from light yellow to pink to ruby red.
What is the difference between pink, yellow, and red grapefruit?
The main difference lies in the color of the flesh and the balance between sweet and bitter. Yellow grapefruithas light flesh and the most bitter notes (linked to naringin); pink grapefruithas pinkish flesh, is sweeter, and contains lycopene; red grapefruit(cultivars Star Ruby, 1970, and Rio Red, 1984) has the most intense flesh and the highest sugar content.
Among the historical varieties is also Marsh, the first seedless grapefruit selected in Florida around 1850. The pink and red pigments result from spontaneous mutations: Ruby Red appeared in Texas in 1929, while Star Ruby and Rio Red were developed later through genetic improvement.
When is the season for Sicilian grapefruits?
In Sicily, grapefruits are typically harvested from December to May: yellow varieties are earlier, while pink and red ones ripen between January and April. We harvest them to order, when the fruit has reached the right degree of ripeness on the tree.
Why choose organic grapefruits?
Choosing organic grapefruits means bringing fruits to your table that are grown without synthetic pesticides and herbicides, respecting the soil and biodiversity. With organic produce, the peelbecomes usable in the kitchen—for zests, candied fruit, and infusions—because it is not treated with waxes and post-harvest preservatives.
Our grapefruits come from certified organic farming in Sicily and are hand-picked. Harvesting to order reduces the time between tree and table and limits waste.
How are grapefruits used in cooking?
The simplest way is as a juice, but grapefruits are also excellent in segments for breakfast, in fruit salads, and in sweet and sour salads—for example, with avocado, fennel, or shrimp. The zest is used for candied fruit and jams, while the juice enhances marinades, spoon desserts, and cocktails.
Pink and red, being sweeter, are ideal for eating fresh; yellow, being more bitter, holds up well in savory combinations and recipes where character is needed.
What are the nutritional values of grapefruit?
Grapefruit is composed of about 90% water and provides an average of 30–40 kcal per 100g. It is a source of vitamin C, provides fiber and potassium; pink and red varieties also contain lycopeneand beta-carotene, pigments with antioxidant action. Who should not eat grapefruit?
Grapefruit can interfere with several medications: it contains furanocoumarins that inhibit the intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 and can increase the blood concentration of some medicines, including some statins (simvastatin, atorvastatin), some calcium channel blockers, and immunosuppressants. The effect can last up to 72 hours. If you are on medication, consult your doctor or pharmacistbefore consuming it regularly.
How are grapefruits stored?
Upon arrival, remove the fruits from their packaging and check for bruises. At room temperature, they keep for 1–2 weeks; in the refrigerator, in the vegetable drawer, they last up to a month. Avoid piling them up and keep them away from heat sources: this way they stay firm and fragrant longer.
How many grapefruits can be eaten per day?
In a balanced diet, one fruit or a glass of juice per day generally represents an adequate portion. Pay attention if you are taking medication (see above) and adapt the quantities to your needs and your doctor's advice.
