Organic Sicilian Passion Fruit (Maracuja)
AranceBio's organic passion fruitis grown in Sicilyby the Danilo Magnano farm and harvested to order, to arrive at your home at the right ripeness. Also known as maracuja, it is a tropical fruit with fragrant pulp and a characteristic sweet-sour taste, offered in a convenient 2 kgpack (approximately 25-35 fruits).
What is passion fruit?
Passion fruit is the fruit of Passiflora edulis, a climbing plant of the Passifloraceae family native to South America. In Italy, the same fruit is also called maracuja, granadilla or maracugià. The name "passion fruit" comes from its flower, which Spanish missionaries associated with the symbols of the Passion of Christ: it therefore does not originate from presumed aphrodisiac properties.
Are maracuja and passion fruit the same thing?
Yes, maracuja and passion fruit refer to the same fruit, Passiflora edulis. "Maracuja" is the South American name (from Tupi mara kuya), "frutto della passione" is the most common name in Italy and "passion fruit" is the English version. The name changes, but the fruit is identical.
What does it taste like and what is it like?
Passion fruit has a leathery skin, purple or yellow-orange in color, enclosing a gelatinous and aromatic orange pulp, rich in small edible black seeds. The taste is intense, sweet-sour and very fragrant, with exotic notes reminiscent of citrus and tropical fruits.
How do you eat passion fruit?
Passion fruit is simply eaten by cutting it in half and scooping out the pulp with a spoon, including the seeds. The seeds are edible and provide a pleasant crunch. It is also perfect in the kitchen: added to smoothies, juices and cocktails, used for spoon desserts, cheesecakes and sorbets, or as a fresh topping for yogurt, fruit salads and even savory fish and white meat dishes.
How to tell if passion fruit is ripe?
A passion fruit is ripe when its skin is slightly wrinkled and yields to gentle pressure: at this stage the pulp is sweeter and more aromatic. Smooth, taut skin, on the other hand, indicates an unripe fruit, which will become sweeter if left to ripen for a few days at room temperature.
What are the properties and benefits of passion fruit?
Passion fruit is a good source of vitamin C and vitamin A, potassium and fiber, and provides natural antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols. It is a low-calorie fruit rich in water, suitable for a varied and balanced diet. The fibers present in the pulp and seeds contribute to normal bowel function.
Are there any contraindications? How many can you eat?
Passion fruit is generally safe and well tolerated: in the context of a varied diet, 1-2 per day can be consumed. Those who suffer from specific allergies or are undergoing particular therapies can ask their doctor for advice before regularly introducing it into their diet.
How do you store passion fruit?
At room temperature, passion fruit continues to ripen in a few days, developing sweetness and fragrance. Once ripe, it can be stored in the refrigerator for about 5-7 days. The pulp, with or without seeds, can be frozen in special containers to always have it ready for juices, sauces and desserts.
