What are Vanilla oranges?

Vanilla oranges are a variety of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) belonging to the blond orange group, seedless and with very thin membranes between segments. The name comes from their delicate taste and aroma reminiscent of vanilla: they do not contain vanilla. They are also known as Vanilla Apireno("apireno" means seedless) and, in the Ribera area, as Paradiso.

Why are they called Vanilla oranges?

They are named for their sweet and velvety aroma, which recalls vanilla. According to tradition, the variety arrived in Sicily around 1400, imported by Genoese sailors from China and India; the seedless form originated from a spontaneous mutation that spread in the Ribera (Agrigento) area.

What do they taste like and why are they "acid-free"?

They have a sweet and smooth taste, almost devoid of the acidic hint typical of citrus fruits. This is due to their very low acidity (0.06–0.15%), among the lowest ever for oranges, combined with a good sugar content (soluble solids 11.5–13.5%). The result is a delicate juice that is not sour even without added sugar.

When is the season for Vanilla oranges?

Vanilla oranges are harvested from December to April, with full ripeness between January and March. Harvesting is manual and concentrated on weekends; shipments depart on Mondays and Tuesdays, so the fruits travel freshly picked. Outside these months, the fresh variety is not available.

What are the properties and benefits of Vanilla oranges?

Vanilla oranges have a good nutritional profile: they are rich in vitamin Cand also contain vitamins A, B1, B2 and PP, mineral salts and citric acid, with about 40–45 kcal per 100 g. They support the immune system and, thanks to their thin skin and low acidity, they are among the easiest oranges to digest, also indicated in cases of gastric or intestinal disorders.

Are Vanilla oranges good for diabetics?

Vanilla oranges are often indicated for people with diabetes because, despite being very sweet, they have a low sugar content and a moderate glycemic impact. However, they are still a sugary fruit: they should be consumed in moderation, and in the presence of diabetes or specific therapies, it is advisable to follow your doctor's instructions.

Do Vanilla oranges have any contraindications?

Vanilla oranges have no particular contraindications and, thanks to their very low acidity, are generally well tolerated even by those suffering from reflux or gastritis. As with any citrus fruit, excessive consumption can cause discomfort to sensitive stomachs; in case of pharmacological therapies or citrus allergies, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

What is the difference between Navel and Vanilla oranges?

The main difference is acidity and the navel. Navel oranges have the characteristic "navel" at the base and a more acidic taste; Vanilla oranges show only a small dot, have a lighter color, are seedless and almost acid-free. Navel is more vibrant and juicy, Vanilla is sweeter and more delicate.

How do you recognize Vanilla oranges?

They are recognized by their spherical shape without a navel, their light, slightly wrinkled and medium-thick skin, and their blond pulp with very thin segment membranes. Their taste is unmistakable: sweet, slightly acidic and fragrant.

How are they used in cooking?

Vanilla oranges can be enjoyed fresh in wedges or as juice, but they are also excellent for dressing salads with oil, salt, onion and olives. The organic and untreated peel can be dried and powdered to flavor sugar and desserts, or used for delicate jams, naturally sweet even with little sugar.
